Pre Flop Strategy

There are a few things that you need to know about how to play Texas Hold'em. Some of these things have to do with the pre-flop strategy. For instance, don't think that you can go into a casino and start betting all of your money because you know a few basics of the game.

Most people would go in betting all they had or close to it if the flop brought them say two nines. Well I'm here to tell you that you need to carefully consider all of the factors involved in a solid pre-flop strategy before you go buck wild with betting. The factors that you might want to consider are the number of players, how aggressive/passive the players that are at your table are, your bankroll, your position at the table and how much risk you are willing to take on.

The reason you should consider the number of players at a table is because if you have a strong hand with say 10 players it is much more likely that someone else at the table has a stronger hand in the pocket than you do. In a short handed game with only a few people the chances of those two nines being one of the best hands out there are pretty good. You also need to be more cautious in larger games because the chance of someone having a pre-flop hand that fits the flop will be much better. The more people there are playing at the table the harder the competition is.

You must observe how aggressive or passive the other players at the table are because this will give you a good idea of how they will bet which will let you know when you can beat them and when you should fold. If you only have about $5 left in your bankroll you will want to play very carefully and pick one hand that is really good and bet on that. You want to get as many players as possible in on the pot so you can take a big pot to increase your bankroll. That is why you just don't want to bet on any hand that comes out hoping to win something. If you aren't dealt good cards fold until you are dealt a hand that you are confident will win. On the other side of that point if you have a high bankroll and are at a low denomination table you can take many more high risk bets and therefore possibly win those high payout jackpots.

Your position at the table is important because of if you are in the late position you have the ability to influence the size of the pot much more than those in early positions. And finally you have to decide whether you are going to play passively or aggressively, this determines how you will bet on each hand that is dealt to you. You can either decide to bet on each hand or to fold on all hands that you don't think have the possibility to win.
